Access My Super — Information for Patients at Prestige Smiles in Treeby
How Access My Super Works
Access My Super is a third-party service that helps eligible Australians apply for compassionate release of superannuation through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This option is available only for medically necessary dental care — not for cosmetic procedures. Our Treeby clinic can provide information, but we cannot offer financial advice.
The process follows a structured pathway from application through to payment. Access My Super manages the application on the patient’s behalf and submits it to the ATO for assessment. The ATO reviews applications and, if approved, notifies the patient’s super fund to release the relevant amount. From start to finish, the process takes approximately two to four weeks. Access My Super charges fees for its service. These fees cannot be paid using released superannuation funds — patients will need to arrange payment of Access My Super’s fees separately. Contact Access My Super directly for details on their fee structure and payment arrangements. They are an external provider and are not affiliated with Prestige Smiles.

Eligibility for Access My Super
To access super through this pathway, patients must meet four key criteria set by the ATO. These include citizenship or residency status, proof of medical necessity, evidence of financial hardship, and documentation requirements. Eligibility is determined by the ATO — not the dental clinic.
- Citizenship/Residency Requirement
You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen. Temporary visa holders are not eligible. - Medical Necessity Requirement
Care must address acute or chronic pain, a life-threatening condition, or acute or chronic mental illness. Cosmetic procedures do not qualify. - Financial Hardship Requirement
You must show you cannot fund care through savings, income, loans, or other available means. - Documentation Requirement
You must provide a quote dated within six months, two medical reports, and evidence of financial hardship. Care must not have been paid for prior to application.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS About Access My Super
How does the Access My Super process work?
The Access My Super process has six steps. It begins with a consultation and a quote at the clinic. You then contact Access My Super and gather your documents. The ATO reviews your application, and your super fund releases the approved amount. The full process takes approximately two to four weeks.
The following outlines the Access My Super process. Prestige Smiles in Treeby is involved in Step 1 only — providing a consultation, treatment plan, and written quote. All remaining steps are managed independently by the patient, Access My Super, and the ATO. For current and complete process information, visit accessmysuper.com.au or ato.gov.au.
- Consultation:
Attend an appointment at Prestige Smiles Treeby. A treatment plan and written quote will be provided for your application. This is the extent of the clinic’s involvement in the application process. - Contact Access My Super:
Reach out to Access My Super directly. They will assess your eligibility and outline their service fees. - Gather documents:
Access My Super will coordinate the required medical reports on your behalf through their telehealth service. You will also need to provide supporting evidence of financial hardship. Both the medical reports and your treatment quote must be dated within six months of your application. - ATO submission:
Access My Super submits your application to the ATO on your behalf. The ATO review takes five to 14 business days. - Fund release:
Once the ATO approves, contact your super fund. Funds are generally released within five to 10 business days. - Payment:
Pay the clinic once funds have been received. Care cannot proceed until funds are confirmed received.
How long does the Access My Super process take?
The Access My Super process takes approximately two to four weeks in total. This covers the time from your first contact through to fund release. Timeframes depend on how quickly documents are submitted and how long the ATO takes to assess your application.
- ATO assessment:
This takes five to 14 business days after Access My Super submits your application. - Super fund release:
Once the ATO approves, your fund releases the amount within five to 10 business days.
Delays are most often caused by missing documents or additional ATO queries. Submitting a complete application may help reduce delays, though the ATO’s processing timeframes and outcomes are independent of the clinic.
Can I access my partner's or parent's superannuation for my dental treatment?
Yes, a financial dependent can use another person’s superannuation for dental care. The super fund holder must apply on the dependent’s behalf. Standard ATO eligibility criteria still apply, including medical necessity and proof of financial hardship. This option is most common for children under 18 or adult dependents with a disability.
- The dependent cannot submit the application themselves. Only the super fund holder can lodge it with the ATO.
- Proof of dependent status is required. This may include tax or Centrelink records showing financial dependence.
- Both medical necessity and financial hardship must still be demonstrated. These requirements apply regardless of who holds the super.
Patients in this situation should contact Access My Super directly. They can assess whether the circumstances meet ATO requirements.
What happens if my Access My Super application is rejected by the ATO?
A rejected application does not mean the end of the process. You may reapply with additional supporting evidence or consider alternative payment options. Access My Super can advise on what information to add before resubmitting. Understanding why the application was rejected is an important first step.
- Incomplete or missing documentation:
Both medical reports must be signed, dated, and within the six-month window. - Insufficient evidence of financial hardship:
The ATO may need clearer proof that other payment options were genuinely unavailable. - Care assessed as cosmetic:
The ATO only approves care that meets strict medical necessity criteria. - Eligibility criteria not met:
Citizenship, residency, or dependent status may need to be verified more thoroughly.
If reapplying is not suitable, alternative options at our Treeby clinic include payment plans, Afterpay, and Zip. Eligibility criteria, terms, and conditions apply. Health fund benefits vary by fund and level of cover.
Will accessing my super affect my credit rating or future loan applications?
Compassionate release of superannuation does not directly affect your credit rating. However, it reduces your super balance, which can have other financial consequences. Some lenders factor super into borrowing assessments. It may also affect eligibility for certain government benefits. A licensed financial adviser can help you weigh these implications.
Early super access can have broader financial consequences.
- Borrowing capacity:
Some lenders include super balance in serviceability calculations for home loans or refinancing. - Government benefits:
A reduced balance may affect the Age Pension, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, or other entitlements. - Retirement savings:
Early access reduces the amount available at retirement, including potential compound earnings over time.
Our clinic cannot provide financial advice on these matters. We strongly recommend speaking with a licensed financial adviser before making a decision.
